We had such a beautiful experience thanks to our guide Firmin, who generously offered an extensive tour of the park, and did his very best to find animals. He is so passionate and friendly, our day … Full review by Nicolas L

Hi, I am planning to visit Akagera National Park next year and I had a question. If I can make it to the entrance of the park and the visitor centre (at Kabarondo), can I join a game drive or any of the other activities without having my own car? And will I be dropped off again at the same visitor centre? Thanks, Sam

Hi, Thanks for your answer. If I can reach the visitor centre can I then just rent a car with guide/driver for myself even if its with empty spots left? What would be the price for that, or do I also need to do it via a local tour company? Cause I will be able to get there, but just with a normal car, not a 4x4. Thanks, Sam

Hello, if you have your own vehcile there are guides available at the park reception who can accompany you while in the park. However there are many tour operators in Kigali who would be able to organise the whole trip for you, pick you up and drop you back in Kigali at the end of your visit. You may still wish to take a guide from the park as they are in the park every day and have a lot of experience and information about the park

Hi! Wondering how likely it is that one would see elephants and the lions in March?

It is very hard to know. Our lion population is increasing (now at 22) and sightings are therefore getting more frequent. And although we do have a population of over 100 elephants, they can be difficult to find! You do need time to explore Akagera, i would not say that it is a park to go to and tick off the 'Big Five'. It's strengths are really its inspiring conservation story, spectacular scenic beauty and huge diversity.

I was under the impression that one was able to simply show up and reserve a campsite upon arrival. Is this not the case? I emailed someone from park headquarters (?), and that's what he told me. This post seems to suggest otherwise.

A local Safari Ranger guide will normally cost around USD 40 for a full day safari, about 20-30 for half day / night safari. A driver with an offroad car will cost you nearly USD 20++ for driver + USD 50++ for the car (both quotes are per day excluding fuel)
