This is a really nice place to visit for a walk in a tropical rainforest. The slopes are very steep either side of you and the forest feels very thick and wild around you. The paths are clear and eas… Full review by ROB19891

If you are near by, stop at the reserve for a few hours. We had multiple guides, Allen and two trainees, as well as Eduardo, from Montibelli. A lot of birds in few hours... Get there before dusk or … Full review by Water_rat_madtown

We will be getting our vehicle after arriving at the airport and driving straight here. Hope to spend a few hours or so... What I want to make sure is - are there easy, short trails? I can't walk far - when I walk I need to sit & take breaks. Seeing as we'll have the whole day to visit, I hope this is possible. Also, as the previous person has asked, is there anywhere to stay that is very close? Or should we just get out on the highway and carry on towards Hostel Real San Marcos .... or further ... .enroute to Catarina? Thanks.

The road out to the Chocoyero-El Brujo reserve (once you get off the main road) is quite rustic, and takes about 30 minutes to get down as it's just a bumpy, dirt road. The hike will be easy after the drive down that road! :-) I would recommend heading back to Catarina for your hotel/hostel stay. There's not much in the area around the reserve. As for hiking trails, the one going to the rock caves where the "Chocoyero" (English translation = parakeets) is very doable. I think it's just over a mile one way, and there aren't many inclines. If you speak Spanish, hiring a local guide there is cheap and worth it. They're very knowledgeable.

How did you travel from Granada? Bus? Car? Lodging nearby or did you simply return in the dark?

I was staying at Montibelli Private Nature Reserve and my guide there took me to Chocoyero in his truck. From Granada you could ask your hotel to get you a guide or taxi to Chocoyero. If you want to see birds other than the Pacific Parakeet, you will see more by spending a couple of nights at Montibelli Reserve.
