Less than two years ago, Jefferson Farfan's career seemed to be finished. Now, the Peru international is ready to shine on the world stage.
The origin of the word "farfan" is unclear, but it may be cognate with the Arabic word farkhan meaning bird. A hypothesis is that this word was commonly given to vagabonds in the Maghreb who were regarded as migratory like birds. By extension, the word farkhan came to refer in the vernacular language to bastards, criminals, and outcasts.

Farfán made his debut in the Eredivisie on 14 August in a 5–2 win against RBC Roosendal. Almost two weeks later, Farfán's European debut would come in the third qualifying round of the Champions League, a 5–0 win against Red Star Belgrade. PSV qualified for the final tournament and he played in all twelve games.
After helping Lima to consecutive League titles and debuting for the Peru national team, he was scouted by legendary Dutch coach Guus Hiddink and brought to PSV Eindhoven. Hiddink's faith in the precocious 20-year-old was immediately repaid as Farfan helped the club reach the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
