HARDINESS ZONE.4-9 GROW.To grow Astrantia from seed, start them in the fall. Astrantia seeds need to be cold stratified in order to germinate. Do the cold stratification in the fall and once they are cold treated, you can plant them in soil and keep the soil warm. WHEN TO PLANT.Early spring or early fall ATTRACTIVE.These flowers are highly attractive to beetles and butterflies, but also other insects. USE.They are the missing piece from all cottage gardens, woodland gardens, alpine gardens, borders, bouquets, and dried floral arrangements. Astrantia major, otherwise known in cultivation as the great masterwort, is a species of flowering plants in the Apiaceae family. This heavenly-looking plant is native to several regions of eastern and central Europe. It grows mostly in grasslands, mountain meadows, clearings, forests, and also close to the streams. Very floriferous and vigorous, Astrantia major 'Star of Beauty' (Great Masterwort) features large clusters of tiny white flowers with magenta-purple tips, crowded together in a dome-shaped flowerhead, just like pins on a cushion. They are surrounded by an elegant ruff of white papery bracts adorned with green tips. Blooms for weeks from early to late summer, the distinctive blooms are borne on erect stems, well above the rosette of lush, deeply cut, mid-green leaves. Thrives in full sun or part shade in rich, medium to wet, well-drained soils.Soils need to be kept consistently moist. Best performance occurs in cool summer climates as Astrantias do not like very hot, humid, or dry conditions.
